The Renault Duster has long been a favourite on South African roads, praised for its rugged utility, high and versatile ground clearance, and pocket-friendly pricing. However, when the 2024 iteration was imported directly from Renault’s Dacia plant in Mioveni, Romania, exposure to Euro exchange-rate pressures and high manufacturing costs led to prices creeping towards the R500,000 mark for base models, putting the vehicle out of reach for many prospective buyers.
What’s New?
Renault South Africa has addressed this challenge by shifting production sourcing to its Renault-Nissan Alliance facility in Chennai, India. Sourcing the 2026 model from India dramatically slashes manufacturing costs, allowing the lineup to re-enter the market at a starting price of under R340,000.
Why Has the Cost Been Slashed So Significantly?
Manufacturing in India allows Renault to benefit from lower labour costs, streamlined local supply-chain logistics, and trade conditions that favour developing-market distribution. The Chennai plant also produces the Duster’s platform twin, the Nissan Tekton, driving production efficiency even further. The previous European models relied heavily on expensive emissions-compliant hybrid components or imported diesel variants. The 2026 model simplifies things for South African driving conditions by offering a punchy 1.0T producing 74 kW for budget-conscious buyers, alongside the proven 1.3T producing 116 kW, also available in the pre-facelift version.
Key Design Changes
The shift to the Indian-built model introduces several distinct exterior and interior styling updates compared with the earlier Romanian-sourced iterations. Despite the substantial price reduction, buyers do not receive a stripped-down vehicle.The new Duster is available in four trim levels:

Rivals: The Renault Duster goes up against the likes of the Toyota Corolla Cross, Suzuki Across, Jaecoo J7 and Kia Seltos.
Exterior
At the front, the new Duster replaces the standard Renault badge with bold “DUSTER” block lettering across the front grille, flanked by sharp Y-shaped LED daytime running lights and a restyled front bumper, as well as a bolder and more muscular bonnet design. With the rear-end boasting a full-width horizontal LED light bar connecting the revised taillights, alongside a thoroughly refreshed rear bumper.
While the new Duster is only available as a front-wheel-drive model, it still retains its rugged all-terrain personality, boasting 212 mm of ground clearance as well as a 50 mm wading depth, with wheel choices ranging between 17-inch and 18-inch alloy wheels that fill out the flared arches.
Interior, Technology and Comfort
Driver-centric and tech-ready, the new Duster’s interior has also received a facelift, with upgrades including new, comfortable seats with thick bolstering, a 10.1-inch OpenR Link touchscreen infotainment system, 7.0-inch or 10.25-inch high-definition digital driver displays, an elevated centre console, and options for a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, carbon trim inlays, and contrast accent stitching on higher trim grades.
Safety
The new Duster comes equipped with standard safety features such as ABS, ESP, EBD, and six airbags across the range.
The upgraded electronic architecture supports up to 17 advanced safety features on flagship trims, including Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Lane Keep Assist, Active Emergency Braking (AEB), and Blind Spot Warning.
Powertrain and Upgraded Platform
Underneath the skin, the transition from the European plant in Romania to the Indian plant brings fundamental mechanical and architectural updates. With Renault promising to break into the NEV segment, this new platform will facilitate a smooth transition into a new Duster Hybrid and eventually a fully electric version.
This new platform now comes available with powertrains designed for the South African market.
A1.0-Litre 3-Cylinder Turbo Petrol: The entry-level 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine produces 74 kW and 160 Nm of torque, mated exclusively to a six-speed manual transmission.
The previous 1.3-Litre 4-Cylinder Turbo Petrol as also been carried over from the previous generation, with a power output of 116 kW and 260 Nm of torque, paired with either a six-speed manual or a responsive six-speed dual-clutch transmission (EDC).
The Drive: What Is It Like Behind the Wheel?
The first thing you notice behind the wheel is the seating position. It is easy to get comfortable, thanks to the new seat designs, which also boast thick bolstering that provides good support through corners. While we only had the chance to sample the 1.3-litre turbo paired with the six-speed EDC, the combination worked well together, providing good power delivery and smooth gear shifts. The 1.3-litre turbo feels well suited to the Duster, offering enough punch for everyday driving while maintaining a smooth and composed character. The EDC gearbox also does a good job of keeping the power delivery seamless, particularly in urban driving and when accelerating onto faster roads with manual override using the steering-mounted paddle shifters. The latest model feels more refined and considerably more modern than its predecessor.
Prices & After-Sales
The new Renault Duster’s pricing comes as a huge surprise. Just two years after the Romanian-built Renault Duster was launched in South Africa, the new Indian-built Duster comes in at R38,000 cheaper.
