The Best of Both Worlds

Jaecoo has made a strong impression with the J7. Its bold exterior design, comfortable interior, generous tech offering, and competitive pricing have positioned it as one of South Africa’s more accessible plug-in hybrid SUVs.
Following some criticism around the fuel consumption of the standard 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine, Jaecoo introduced the SHS plug-in hybrid variant, aimed at improving efficiency while maintaining performance.
Visually, the J7 SHS remains largely unchanged from the standard model. There are a few subtle updates, including redesigned wheels with more aerodynamic covers to reduce drag. Inside, the most noticeable change is the relocation of the gear lever to the steering column, contributing to a cleaner centre console layout.

The most significant upgrade lies in the powertrain. The 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine is now paired with an 18.3kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack and a front-mounted electric motor, working through a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) system.
Combined outputs increase to 255kW and 525Nm, more than sufficient for a five-seater family SUV. Jaecoo claims a total driving range of up to 1,200km, along with an electric-only range of up to 90km, which should comfortably cover most daily commutes.

What Is It Like to Drive?
With the battery pack mounted low under the floor, the added weight appears to benefit overall stability. The J7 SHS feels planted at higher speeds and remains composed through corners. The suspension setup strikes a good balance between comfort and control, even when driven with some enthusiasm.
Power delivery is smooth and immediate, thanks to the electric motor’s instant torque. Overtaking requires little effort, and the transition between electric driving at lower speeds and petrol assistance under heavier acceleration is generally seamless. The DHT system operates unobtrusively, contributing to a refined driving experience.

Quirks and Features
Beyond the updated powertrain, a few interior changes stand out. The fighter jet-inspired gear selector found in the standard J7 has been replaced by a steering column-mounted shifter. This frees up space in the centre console, although it may take some time to get used to.
Some physical controls, such as the electronic handbrake and mirror adjustments, have been integrated into the infotainment system and steering wheel controls. While this creates a cleaner layout, it may require an adjustment period for drivers accustomed to traditional buttons.
Comfort and Convenience
Comfort levels remain consistent with the standard J7. Heated and ventilated front seats are retained, and rear passengers now benefit from heated seats as well. Cabin space remains generous, and overall refinement aligns with expectations for the segment.
Verdict
At R689,900, the Jaecoo J7 SHS presents a compelling option in the plug-in hybrid SUV space. It offers strong performance, meaningful electric range for daily use, and a well-equipped interior at a competitive price point.
For buyers looking to transition into electrified driving without sacrificing practicality or performance, the J7 SHS is worth considering.
