This October, Cape Town is about to experience something truly special. The Speed Classic Cape Town makes its debut on Philip Kgosana Drive, a road famous for its breathtaking views and sweeping curves. On 25 and 26 October, this stretch will come alive with the sound of high-revving engines, rare classics, and modern supercars in a weekend that blends pure motorsport adrenaline with luxury lifestyle flair.

Cape Town Welcomes a New World-Class Event
Backed by the City of Cape Town and Motorsport South Africa, the Speed Classic promises two unforgettable days of action, style, and community. With Table Mountain as a backdrop, spectators will enjoy a mix of racing heritage and cutting-edge performance like never before.
Cape Town’s Executive Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says the city is proud to host such an event:
“We love supporting world-class events like the Speed Classic. This race has the potential to become a major highlight on Cape Town’s calendar and attract motorsport fans from around the world.”
Event Director Garth Mackintosh adds, “The energy is incredible. With the City’s support, we’re ready to deliver something truly world-class and unique for the Mother City.”

Classic Car Saturday – A Celebration of Motoring Heritage
The weekend kicks off on Saturday, 25 October, with Classic Car Saturday, where over 70 rare and iconic cars will take to the hill. Fans will see everything from vintage Bentleys to legendary Ferraris roaring back to life.
Highlights include:
- Harry Tayler’s 1930 Bentley 4.5L Le Mans, the only one of its kind in South Africa.
- Stuart Mackay-Davidson’s 1980 Ferrari 308 GTB, one of just five locally.
- Charles Arton’s 1979 March 79A, built for Formula Atlantic racing.
South African driver Franco Scribante will race his historic 1970 Chevron B19, while his brother Silvio Scribante will take on the course in a Ford Capri Perana, a homegrown legend from Basil Green’s workshop. The line-up also features international drivers from Switzerland, including Serge Endress in a 1965 Lola T70 Spyder, and Jan Lammers, the Dutch motorsport legend and 1988 24 Hours of Le Mans winner. Race Director Enzo Kuun sums it up perfectly: “Classic cars are rolling art. They carry history, passion, and soul. The Speed Classic gives people the chance to see them in action, not just parked in a showroom.”

Supercar Sunday – The Battle for King of the Mountain
On Sunday, 26 October, the focus shifts to Supercar Sunday, where modern machines and race-bred monsters will battle for the King of the Mountain title.
Expect a lineup that reads like a dream garage:
- Farouk Dangor’s Ferrari SF90 Stradale, one of only 11 in South Africa.
- Dawie Joubert’s Lotus Exige, powered by a twin-turbo Ferrari V8.
- Franco Scribante’s 1500-hp Nissan GT-R “The Sheriff.”
- Marcel Angel’s Ferrari 488 GT3, a multiple championship winner.
- Connor Kilbride’s Ligier JS53-Evo 2, a lightweight prototype competing in SA for the first time.
With over 100 competitors and around 10,000 spectators expected, it’s set to be a weekend full of speed, style, and nonstop excitement.

More Than a Race – A Lifestyle Experience
Speed Classic Cape Town isn’t just for motorsport lovers. The event will also feature a race village, kids’ zone, live big screens, and gourmet food stalls. For those wanting something extra special, there are exclusive VIP lounges and grandstand experiences with the best views on the course. Project Director Steyn Momberg says safety is a top priority: “The course is fully approved by Motorsport South Africa, and we’re using the same barriers and safety setups as the Formula E event. Spectators can enjoy the thrill safely.”

Driving Economic Growth Through Motorsport
According to Alderman JP Smith, the Speed Classic adds to Cape Town’s growing motorsport economy, already worth around R350 million annually. The event will bring in visitors, create local business opportunities, and boost tourism at the start of Cape Town’s summer season. Past motorsport events like the Cape Town E-Prix and Simola Hillclimb have shown how powerful motorsport can be for economic growth and global visibility.“Our goal is to make the Speed Classic a yearly tradition,” says Mackintosh. “We want to put Cape Town on the world motorsport map and create something the whole city can be proud of.”
