Comfort, Safety, and Electrified Efficiency Redefined
Volvo Car South Africa has unveiled the refreshed XC90, its flagship seven-seater SUV that continues to embody the brand’s core pillars: safety, sophistication, and sustainability. The latest update enhances the XC90’s elegant design, quiet comfort, and user experience while maintaining the long-distance practicality and family-focused versatility it’s known for.

Electric-First Everyday Driving
Leading the update is the XC90 T8 Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), offering an impressive electric-only range of over 70 km (WLTP), enough to cover most daily commutes without using a drop of fuel. Volvo’s real-world data shows that many plug-in hybrid owners complete the majority of their trips on electric power alone, aligning perfectly with the brand’s “electric-first” strategy.
For longer journeys, the efficient petrol engine seamlessly combines with the electric motor, extending the total range to over 800 km. The hybrid system also delivers full-time all-wheel drive when required, ensuring confidence and stability on rough terrain.

The updated XC90 lineup in South Africa continues to offer two electrified powertrains, the B5 Mild-Hybrid and the T8 Plug-in Hybrid, both paired with Volvo’s smooth eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
• B5 MHEV: A 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, producing 183 kW and 350 N.m of torque. Fuel consumption is a modest 8.1 L/100 km, offering an excellent balance of power and efficiency.
• T8 PHEV: A powerful hybrid setup combining electric and petrol power for a total output of 340 kW and 709 N.m. The result is a thrilling performance 0–100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds while returning a combined consumption figure as low as 1.8 L/100 km.
This dual powertrain approach gives buyers the freedom to choose what suits them best: refined efficiency or effortless performance.
Interior and Tech
Comfort remains the cornerstone of the XC90’s driving experience. Adaptive dampers and standard air suspension work in harmony to deliver a ride that’s both stable and serene. The SUV automatically adjusts its height, lowering by 20 mm for easier entry or improved aerodynamics, and raising by 40 mm for tougher terrain.
Additional sound insulation further reduces wind and road noise, while standard 21-inch alloy wheels enhance road presence. Those seeking a bolder look can opt for 22-inch wheels.

What’s new in the cabin?
Inside, the XC90’s cabin has been refined with horizontal dashboard lines, new decorative inlays made from premium recycled materials, and a more open, calming layout. Vertical air vents, subtle ambient lighting, and increased storage space lend a fresh, functional feel.
The centre console now features an additional cup holder and a more conveniently placed wireless charger, keeping the main compartment clear. With all seats folded flat, luggage capacity grows to 1,950 litres, while keeping all three rows up still provides a useful 301 litres.
The Ultra trim takes luxury further with a Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity sound system, while Plus models feature a Harman Kardon Premium setup, both tuned to deliver rich, immersive audio experiences.
Trim Levels and Equipment
The XC90 is available in Plus and Ultra trims for both powertrains, each generously equipped to Volvo’s high standards. Every model includes:
• Four-zone climate control
• Panoramic sunroof
• Heated steering wheel
• Power-adjustable front seats with memory
• Heated front and rear seats
On the exterior, Matrix LED headlights flank a redesigned grille, adding a sharper and more commanding road presence. Inside, buyers can personalize their cabin with materials like Nappa leather, Navy Herringbone textile, or Nordico upholstery, paired with elegant inlays such as Grey Ash, Light Beige Wood, or Checkered Aluminium.
A standout detail remains the handcrafted Orrefors crystal gear lever, a timeless reminder of Volvo’s attention to design craftsmanship.

More Comfort and Tech
At the heart of the dashboard sits a new 11.2-inch high-resolution touchscreen, running Volvo’s latest infotainment system with built-in Google integration, wireless Apple CarPlay, and over-the-air updates to keep features fresh and intuitive. Navigation, voice commands, and real-time updates are now easier and more responsive than ever.

Safety
Since its first generation in 2002, the XC90 has been synonymous with safety, and the latest model continues that legacy. It features a rigid safety cage, advanced collision avoidance systems, and a suite of driver assistance technologies that include:
• Pilot Assist & Adaptive Cruise Control
• Collision Mitigation Support (front and rear)
• Lane Keeping Aid & Oncoming Mitigation
• Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with Cross-Traffic Alert
• 360° Camera & Park Assist
• Hill Start Assist & Hill Descent Control
With dual front, side, and curtain airbags, Isofix anchor points, and Volvo’s renowned Side Impact Protection System (SIPS), the XC90 remains one of the safest SUVs on the road.
