Here’s What to Expect
Lepas, a new Chinese premium car brand under the Chery umbrella, has officially confirmed its debut in South Africa in 2026. Positioned to take on the growing demand for high-tech, design-led vehicles, Lepas aims to make a bold entrance into the country’s competitive automotive market, which we have seen the Chinese Automakers making moves.
A Fresh Face with Strong Backing
Although Lepas is a new name, it’s backed by Chery, one of China’s most established automakers. The brand will serve as Chery’s premium arm, with a focus on style, advanced technology, and versatile performance. Mkre like we see Jaecoo and Omoda.

The launch will be led by the Lepas L8, a flagship SUV unveiled earlier this year at the 2025 Chery Business Conference in Wuhu, China. While the full local model lineup hasn’t been confirmed yet, two additional SUVs the L6 and L4 are expected to join the range based on previews from the same event.
Lepas plans to expand its global range to five vehicles, targeting over 500,000 annual global sales, according to Autostat.
Stylish, Versatile, and Tech-Savvy
The Lepas brand is set to appeal to younger, style-conscious buyers who want more than just a car they want an experience. According to the company, Lepas vehicles will cater to everything from family life to executive lifestyles, combining sleek design with modern comfort and technology.
The name “Lepas” blends the words “leap” and “passion,” while the L8’s design draws inspiration from a running leopard symbolizing agility and power, says head designer Ivan Dulanovic.

Powertrain Options
The L8 SUV will be available internationally in three variants:
• Petrol (ICE): Featuring Chery’s reliable 2.0-litre turbocharged engine likely the main option for South Africa.
• Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV): Powered by the same engine, paired with Chery’s advanced Super Hybrid System (SHS).
• Fully Electric (EV): Expected to offer an impressive range of up to 700km.
A Brand for the Bold
Lepas is more than just a premium vehicle brand it’s a lifestyle offering, says newly appointed Letitia Herold, the former Honda South Africa executive who now serves as the National Brand & Marketing Manager.
“We’re speaking to a generation that wants more than just a car they want an experience that reflects who they are.
Herold will oversee the brand’s launch strategy and marketing rollout across South Africa.
More details about pricing, availability, and the official lineup to be updated ahead of the 2026 launch.
